Most people these days change their mobile handset every 12 to 18 months, and there are now reported to be more mobile phones in the world than there are people, quite a staggering statistic when you think about it.
On top of this is the fact the the numbers are set to grow significantly as rising economies like India and China continue to develop. There is actually a lot more scope within those countries to sell more phones than are currently being used.
This is great news for mobile manufacturers, but not such good news for the environment. There are some pretty unpleasant substances used in the production of mobile phones, such as heavy metals and other toxins.
On the flip side, there are also a number of recoverable high value materials such as gold and silver, not to mention a great marking for pre-owned, or “spares and repairs” type handsets, particularly in developing markets.
So, for once, the interests of the environment and businesses are actually aligned when it comes to mobile phone recycling! Rather than throw your old phone away, sell it, make some money from it and help the environment at the same time!
There are now lots of different companies operating, from small specialists to high street brands offering drop off points in store etc. If you just want to dispose of your old phone safely, then consider donating it to a charity who can profit from it.
If on the other hand you want to get the best possible price consider using a comparison site like the one I used to sell my mobile, on which you can compare the price paid by a number of different recycling companies, as well as garner information on those companies in a central place.
However you decided to dispose of your phone, just make sure it is done properly and NEVER simply thrown in the trash (from where it will be sent to landfill).
